What? Washington, DC is Ranked The 37th Happiest City In The US?

What the hell! We are down the list as 37th happiest State/City?

A new study I just read on Live Science ranks Washington, DC as the 37th happiest city in America and Alaska is #7? I wonder what type of criteria they used to make such conclusion.

They claim the results are based on an examination of two data sets, one that included personal reports of happiness for 1.3 million Americans and the other that included objective measures, such as how crowded that state is, air quality, home prices and other factors known to impact quality of life.

Interestingly, the states with the highest educational standards and mandatory regulations like DC and NY, are at the bottom of the happiness scale. Perhaps “ignorance” knows something more than the rest of academia suspects. So, I guess, it does make sense to be happy when you accept life, rather than added stress in fighting for a living, or stress of big city living.

Other thing I don’t get, how the heck Louisiana became #1? Last time I checked, Louisiana is an economically depressed state with a lacking education system.

Anyway, here are their complete ranking of 50 U.S. states and our DC in order of their well-being:

1. Louisiana
2. Hawaii
3. Florida
4. Tennessee
5. Arizona

Washington, DC One Step Closer To Same-Sex Marriage

Referring to my previous coverage on this issue, if one person in DC understands the importance of such right, he is our Mayor Adrian Fenty who signed the bill to legalize same-sex marriage in our nation capital yesterday. It just needs to be signed by our Congress in 30 days as the last step. Fenty is certain that our Democratic-controlled Congress will approve it.

Mayor Adrian Fenty connection to this bill is his father, Phil Fenty, who is black, and mother, Jan Fenty, who is white. They both moved from Buffalo to Washington back in 1967 to get married and their parents were furious about their interracial relationship.

Not sure how many of you guys watched Fenty yesterday as he signed the bill. He was unusually emotional. He spent about 5 minutes talking about similar problem his parent went through.

Not surprisingly, just as the mayor signed the bill, many of the prominent homophobic such as Bishop Harry Jackson, a leading same-sex marriage opponent, issued a statement, vowing to continue the fight in Congress and the courts. Yeah! Good luck with that Bishop!

Frankly, who cares what the fraud, Bishop Harry Jackson says. Who cares what he thinks. He’s a con artist. He doesn’t even live in the DC. My understanding is he has tried to defraud the DC Voting Bureau last year by fraudulently registering to vote in the city where he has never voted, does not live not work.

Anyway, I am very proud to live in this great city of ours, WASHINGTON,DC where the city council and the mayor have passed a law legalizing gay marriage, and soon to be signed by our Congress :-)

Congratulation to David Catania, who introduced the bill, Mayor Fenty who signed the bill, the gay & lesbian community of Washington, DC who will enjoy the benefits, and to all Washingtonians who will end up living in a better city!

Congrats To Another DC Based Web 2.0 Company, Living Social!

They just partnered with Newsweek magazine. Living Social is a developer of popular social networking tools on Facebook! Last month, the two companies opened voting to Facebook users, polling millions of people about the moments and figures they felt helped shape the first 10 years of the 21st century. Newsweek’s editors and celebrities also contributed. Results are available at the link below.

Living Social, initially started out as a Facebook developer. However, they have been also creating social app across many social networks past two years or so. They raised $5 million in a series A financing from Grotech Ventures. Steve Case also personally invested. Where is the Steve Case Connection? Living Social’s CEO, Tim O’Shaughnessy, used to work for AOL and also worked for Case at Revolution Health. I still can’t get over with the $10m monthly burn rate of Revolution Health used to spend.

Living Social specializes in social apps that let people organize, review, and discover books, music, movies, restaurants, video games, and beer including ReadingSocial, TuneSocial, ReelSocial, BrewSocial, etc. They launched in February of 2008. I think they have about 40 million users. I read it somewhere.

Although, the catalog of reviews may become a valuable database, but not sure the apps themselves are that popular. I am saying that based on their number of active users on Facebook.

So, check them out and let us know what you think.

The Real Yogurt and Labneh For Washingtonians

One of my fellow Washingtonians suggested an awesome idea that I should have thought of it myself – sharing my cooking skills with other Washingtonians and of course the rest of the world. Those of you who don’t know me, I am a good cook. Thanks to my fat Mamma who taught me how and what to cook before she shipped me to DC 23 years ago. This is her when she was a babe :-) :-) . I have been making most of my own food from scratch which has contributed significantly to my good health and weight :-)

Considering our crappy economy, I think you’ll will find my cooking beneficial – both in terms of health and saving more money in your pocket. Here is the first one:

How to make Yogurt or Labneh (strained yogurt)

Stuff you need:
. One 32 Oz Yogurt
. One Gallon of Milk
. A pot
. A bag made out of cloth. Can’t find one, use one of your spare pillow cases

Instruction:
1. Pour the gallon of milk in the Pot and heat it up on stove for a bout 20-30 minutes on medium till it starts boiling. Once you see it boiling, let it boil for 5 minutes

Important Note: during the heating process, make sure to stir the milk once every 5 minutes so the milk doesn’t burn and get stuck to the bottom of the pot. If the milk does burn a little bit like it is shown in this picture, no a big deal do. Just let it be.

2. Once the milk boiled for 5 minutes, take the pot off the stove, pour it into another pot, and let it cool off. Not too cool though. It should reach to the point till the milk is still warmer than room temperature. You can check it out by sticking your finger into it. It might take an hour to an hour an half for the milk to cool off, depending on the room temperature.

3. Add the half or all of the 32 oz yogurt to the already cooled off milk in the pot, and stir it till the yogurt is dissolved in the milk.

4. Put the top of the pot back on and wrap the pot up with a blanket so it stays warm. Keep it warm for minimum 4 hours. I usually wrap it up with the blanket and stuff it in the oven. Obviously, no need to turn on the oven. I just do this so it stays warm. It might help to warm up the oven first before stuffing the wrapped pot into the oven. Make sure the oven does not get hot at all. Just keep it warp and then turn it off before you put the pot in there.

5. Take the blanket off the pot and put the pot in the in the refrigerator for one or two hours

6. At this point, your yogurt is ready, but you will see some yellowish water on top of it. Depending on how watery you want your yogurt, you can just stir it so the water on top becomes part of the yogurt or dump the yogurt into the bag and start squeezing the water out of it. Again, if you want your yogurt harder, simply squeeze the bag more for longer period of time like it’s shown in the picture.

7. Empty the strained yogurt into a container; add salt and paper and it is ready.

So, again, the more you get water out of your yogurt, the harder the yogurt will become.

Bone Appetit :-)

So much for y Security Clearance Working on our Drone Predator Back in 90′s!

Back in 1996 – 1998, I was one of the project managers at Yurie Systems in charge of enhancing the live video feed for the communication systems between our Pentagon and Bosnia to support our servicemen there. The project was so sensitive and secretive that every time I wanted to go to the bathroom to crap, I was required to sign in and out multiple times. This was a top secret project those days. Now, you see our work every where including the movie Transformers, etc. :-)

Well, so much for all that sensitive crap! I just heard on CNN the Iraqi insurgents have been watching our service men on their large screen TV by intercepting the communication links coming from our Predator drones using only a $26 off-the-shelf software called SkyGrabber made by a Russian company called Skysoftware. What the f**k?

It looks like they hacked into an un-encrypted or unprotected communications link. The stolen video feeds tells me that the bad guys continue to find simple ways of counteracting our sophisticated military technologies. I recall the technical challenges we had using encryption for live video to be used by multiple users back in 1997, but I thought it was fixed by now. I guess not. More Crap!

What’s even more bizarre, our military discovered it last year and sharing it with us now! They found out about this when they apprehended a Shiite militant whose laptop contained files of intercepted drone video feeds. In July, the our military found pirated drone video feeds on other militant laptops, leading many of our officials to conclude that militant groups were regularly intercepting feeds.

The good News is none of our servicemen were compromised. At least, that is what our Pentagon says. I hope this is the wake up call for them to move their ass and start working on our encryption technology.

Those of you not familiar with our drone, here is a couple of related videos:

Washingtonian Tease – I Am Sureeee, Your Hand Just Happened To Land Right There

Not sure what to write about this one,  but to say even Washingtonian women are awesome!  Unfortunately, I didn’t have the pleasure to be there to take this artistic photo. A friend who had attended his corporate Christmas party in Mayflower hotel in Downtown DC last night, sent this to me. Apparently, these sexy ladies knew exactly how to drive us morons, men crazy.

I just wish I was there to offer them a cup of coffee in my place ;-) Damn! How could I miss such a party!!!

Anyway, aside from the politics, corruptions, and scandals, Washington is just soooooo pure and Awwwwwwwesome! Can’t you just see that?

Speaking of Mayflower Hotel, It is the one the New York governor, Eliot Spitzer shagged his high-priced call girl and lost his job over it.

I recall my company’s Christmas party in the same Hotel while with Yurie Systems back in 1997. Great memories from that party :-) Our company went public that year and was sold to Lucent for $1.23 B in March of 1998.  It was very rewarding to all employees.

The Hotel is right in Connecticut Ave and L Street just south of Dupont Circle.  Interested in staying in the Hotel, here is where you can learn more about it. I mean what more do you need to know. The NY governor had a blast there for years :-)

Hey Washington Club Maniacs! BOBINA will be performing this Saturday at FUR Nightclub

Those of you not familiar who the heck he is, Bobina is #1 D.J in Russia and he will be in our town this weekend.

The bad News is he will be performing at FUR located at:
33 Patterson Street Northeast
Washington, DC 20002-3349
(202) 842-3401
Time: This Sat Dec 19th. Be there by 10:00 p.m
Buy ticket online
Here is how to get there map

Although Bobina rocks, but, here is a friendly warning about FUR:

Personally, the place is not my favorite club in DC. However, they have the best DJs coming through on Saturday nights. Depending on your taste. Otherwise, the lay out and the entire building sucks. So, if you don’t care about the place and love Bobina, go for it.

When you arrive, you are quickly shuffled into a $20 parking lot as these attendants have the market cornered. They know how to scam people by acting as though cheaper lots are full. It’s the oldest trick in the book but then again, this is DC, and we love it like this. So, I suggest take a taxi.

If you are still stupid enough to drive there, after parking, your next step is to make it in to the club after standing in an artificially extended line, simply another trick clubs like to pull to make others think the place is packed.

Once inside this multi-level crappy warehouse which I am surprised they haven’t received any lawsuit for poorly lit staircases and misplaced fixtures yet, there are a number of bars to hit that are more than willing to rape you on price. Granted, this is typical in the bar / nightclub scene .. but drinks for two people here could easily equate to about $100.

Trying to make it short, this place is anything but amazing. It’s always crowded, the drinks are expensive, and the crowd is far from the best. I heard from one of my female friend she got molested – literally: guys would walk by, grab a boob, and keep walking and she got hassled by guys. Unless you’re VIP or have something worked out with the bouncers or know someone there- don’t bother.

The sound system is horrible! While I love it loud music, I also like to hear what is being played. These people have no idea how the equalizer system works and they played it at such a high volume that I though the speakers were going to come right out of the cabinets!

So, as for just regular night clubbing, NOT worth the confusion with the lines, the pricey parking, and the wait.

If still interested in going, I strongly suggest you buy the ticket in advance here and be there by 10:00.

Have fun!

Integral (Web 2.0 + Gov 1.0) With Min Limit From Yr 2008 To Yr 2012 = GovLoop

I hope you all have had a chance to check out my recent posts about Gov 2.0 and GovLuv. There is another Gov thing called Govloop in DC.They have been around for over a year.

Govloop was founded by Steve Ressler who came into the government in 2004. The site was launched last year and was acquired by GovDelivery a few month ago. So, they are now a division of GovDelivery, and Steve, has been running the site independently from GovDelivery since the acquisition. Their mission is to integrate Web 2.0 goodies into the old government known as Gov 1.0 . As for the limit from 2008 to 2012 I used in the equation, well, based on how Webenized the Obama administration has been, I can totally see the potential for Govloop during this administration. But not sure about the next one. So, if we end up having another one similar to old Bush-Chaney regime in 2012, I just can’t imagine republicans allow the Government continues to stay as open as it is today.

Anyway, back to Govloop. Steve saw a real need to have a place online where different branches of government employees could talk or share ideas on various topics or ask questions. That’s why he launched the site. As of today, they have about 23,000 members since their launch date. Not a big number compare to 350 m of Facebook, but I guess it is a decent number if we are talking only US Government community.

As for their parent company, GovDelivery, they are a software-as-a-service, cloud computing platform that government agencies use to communicate. For example, people can sign up to receive information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about specific topics and have that information delivered via GovDelivery.

One challenge they might be facing is the possible set back from several Government officials who still think social networking is a distraction and waste of time. They just have to find a way to demonstrate the ROI to them. Govloop needs to show them that they can help them to get more work done effectively and fast. It will be fascinating to see how Govloop and GovDelivery overcome this. Wish them luck!

As I mentioned in my previous post, Gov 2.0 initiatives are very important and critical for all of us – the citizens, the Senators, The Congressmen, the Senate, the White house, etc. Gov 2.0 unlocks stores of data that can better inform and empower us, the citizens, to have an impact on our communities, governments, and the decisions being made. We have all experienced the difference when there is a free and clear line of communication between citizens and their government, and seen the powerful things that can happen. So, I hope they can convey this message to the Gov 1.0 people who are standing on their way.

What’s also interesting, they have a Fund called AwesomeGov Fund which aims to highlight, honor and support government by raising awareness about government-related individuals, groups and programs that are inspiring in their ability to create impact and make government better. They are committing a minimum of 5% of all their revenue in 2010 to the “AwesomeGov” Charity fund.

So, I guess Govloop is all about helping US Government employees to talk to each other effectively via their site. While, GovLuv establishes an effective and clear line of communication between us, the citizen and both our congressmen and Senators via their site.
