Wireless Electricity Or Surgically Implanted Web Under Our Skin?

by Elias Shams
Which one is next?

The launch of iPad by Apple last week, took me back to the mid 90’s when I had just started accessing the Internet using my state of art technology 9600 bps analog modem :-) I still remember my excitement over 18,200 bps modem when it came out. WOW! Then, there was ISDN that became obsolete two years later, then DSL, Cable, and Wi-Fi in parallel with struggling WiMax.

Can you now imagine functioning without Wi-Fi? Even Wi-Fi is old News these days. Considering how fast the smartphones like iPhone, Google’s Nexus One, Droid are becoming our next computing device, let’s skip the internet access topic from PC to 3G (3rd Generation) mobile network that was introduced in the early 2000s and quickly spread to major cities worldwide.

There is even 4G Phones that its rumors came out by the French website earlier this month. It is supposed to be the next generation of iPhone (to be released in July of this year). The Apple Tablet is even rumored to have a data plan on Verizon and AT&T’s 3G networks. More and more laptops come with built-in 3G and WiMax access as well. Read more…

Another Reason Why DC Is Awesome These Days

by Elias Shams

When was the last time you saw any of our presidents exchange love with the opposition party like this?

In a remarkably frank encounter, our President chastised Republican lawmakers yesterday during the GOP retreat for opposing him on taxes, health care and economic stimulus, while they accused him of ignoring their ideas and driving up the national debt.

It was one of the most amazing give-and-take between Obama and Republicans. This is the Obama I knew and believed in. A detail man with his eye on the solution. Watch this unique event where Obama turns the political rhetoric into mush and serves up some home truths. I need him to do this in a room full of die-hard…

The Best Of Jon Stewart This Week

by Elias Shams
To really enjoy Best of Jon Stewart for this week, you need to watch an older one which is related. I shall call it “the South Carolina Connection” :-)

South Carolina was first to secede from the union and first to fire upon the United States at Fort Sumter to begin our bloodiest war which they fought in favor of one man owning another man. How far they have come hey?

more about “Daily Show: Thank You, South Carolina!“, posted with vodpod

Now, here is his best out of his five shows for this week when South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer compared children who receive free or reduced lunches at school to stray animals. He totally opened up a big ole can o’ worms for Jon Stewart. Governor Andre used his childhood teachings as a metaphor as to why there‘s a problem with giving children a free meal: “My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed! You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply, they will reproduce.”

We’ll reserve comment and let you see for yourself.

The Classical Music Lovers of Washington, DC

by Elias Shams
There is a nice Classical Concert with Capuçon Trio next Tuesday, February 02 at 7:15 p.m in the French Embassy in DC. The program will be followed by a complimentary French wine reception. It will be a great moment to sit back and relax to a delightful concert and to meet the artists.

Brought together by Martha Argerich, the Capuçon-Angelich Trio — one of the most promising ensembles in the world of chamber music today — features the native French duo of violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Gautier Capuçon, considered internationally to be two of the world’s most gifted string players, along with the US-born award winning pianist Nicholas Angelich. The trio has recorded on Virgin Classics and EMI labels. Read more…

The Night Belongs To IBIZA

by Kamran Abdi
It is Fridaaaaaaay and time to partaaaaaaay!!!

Heading to Ibiza this weekend – one of the best served by DJs nightclub packed with beautiful people of Washington, DC. The club is very international and HOT! My first time visit to Ibiza was pretty fun, maybe because of all the gorgeous women there which has always been my weakness. Once I spot one, I go blind. If I spot many, nothing else counts :-) There is never shortage of angels with their wings flying around at Ibiza.

They have another happening there tomorrow night at 10:00 p.m – BT’s Live Laptop Symphony. If interested, you need to RSVP. Here are some great pics from our last party there. Sorry for a few missing heads. I was too drunk to keep the camera straight :-)

Let me start my review with their ground zero video.  Blast the volume first:

The Place rocks! Not as good as my favorite one, Lima, but it is great. Read more…

Awesome DC Joins California and Michigan As A Chevrolet Volt Lead Retail Market

by Elias Shams
General Motors announced that Washington DC will be Among First U.S. Markets to Carry Chevrolet Volt - set for a simultaneous rollout in late 2010.  No doubt in mind, Washington is likely a market as much for political reasons as it is for commercial or technical reasons.  ;-)

Those of you not familiar enough with this particular car, it is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It is designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery is depleted, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range if there is no access to an electrical outlet to recharge the battery, providing peace of mind by eliminating range anxiety. Pricing has not been announced. Read more…

It Is Sexy! It Is Elegant! It Is Awesome! It Is iPad!

by Elias Shams
The most beautiful beast was finally unleashed yesterday at the media event in San Francisco – the hotly-anticipated tablet computer from Apple, iPad. Would this tablet computing device match the revolutionary commercial success of the iPhone? Or could it instead flounder along the lines of Apple’s Newton?

The first thing came to my mind was the XXL version of the iPhone :-)

Here is its size comparison next to an iMac –>

Features

iPad features an updated version of the iPhone’s operating system working through a half-inch thin, 9.7-inch touchscreen display with virtual keyboard, built-in speakers and microphone. It is powered by an Apple developed 1 GHz processor. It weighs 1.5 lbs.  The device would use the same software development tools and skills as the iPhone as well as its own “big tablet” apps and nearly every app written for the iPhone. It has the ability to browse the web, check e-mail, listen to music and edit photos. The iTunes store is built in, letting users buy music, movies and television shows right on the device. iPhone apps can be downloaded on the iPad, where they can be blown up to a larger size. by Elias Shams
Tonight at 9:00 p.m EST is your chance to ask questions from our President after his State of The Union speech on YouTube’s CitizenTube channel as well as on The White House’s brand new iPhone app.

YouTube will be opening up a special Moderator series for citizens to submit their questions.

Following the President’s speech, all of you will be able to submit a question and vote on others at YouTube.com/CitizenTube. Then next week, the President will answer questions in a special online event, live from the White House.

So, for clarification, a) President Obama will NOT be answering those questions TONIGHT b) You need to get your circle of family members and friends to vote on your questions once submitted.

Investments Down In DC-Area, Improvement On The Way

by Elias Shams
According to the latest report from MoneyTree, Venture capitalists invested $163.4 million in DC-area companies during the fourth quarter, the highest total of any quarter last year, and more than double the amount invested during the first quarter. Despite the strong finish, however, the $539.6 million invested in local firms during the year was a 45% drop from 2008 levels.

I have a few friends in the area that killed the deal for not willing to give up a bigger percentage of their companies to the investors. The ideas were great….. The VCs were great….. the entrepreneurs just did not want to give up more at such early stage of their deal known as series A investment. I wonder how much of the 45% drop was as the result of such ongoing battle between the entrepreneurs and the investors?

The report on seed-stage financing was not great either, but still there were a few good signs – 2 percent increase in terms of $$$ :-) , but not in terms of number of the deals :-( I have no doubt the continuous seed-stage financings has a lot to do with the fact the investors know some of America’s most successful companies were founded during recessions. Historically, when times are bad for the economy, it can be a great time to start a business. 16 of the 30 companies that make up the Dow industrial average were started during a recession or depression. These include Microsoft, Disney, McDonald’s, General Electric and Johnson & Johnson. In fact, from what I remember, Although, Google started during the glory days of late 90’s, but it really started kicking ass during the 2001 recession. Read more…
