Jon Stewart And Glenn Beck Connection – Conservative Libertarian

by Elias Shams
The best of The Daily Show this week was the one on Thursday night. Jon Stewart made it official that Glenn Beck is not a joke anymore and now important and influential. Jon went all-in on with a whopping 15-minute parody of the Fox News host. This was unbelievably funny, and pretty well done. When Stewart took “Arian” from “Libertarian” and asked, “Why an “i” instead of a “y”? Why, indeed?

Frankly, my problem isn’t in that Glenn Beck gets ratings or has followers. It is in the method he uses and how many people that “follow” him don’t realize that his show is opinion posing as information. My comment is based on several people/friends I know who just love this guy and constantly spout things he says.

Enjoy his show here:

Have You Experienced Mate?

Diane Noboa

By Diane Noboa
Walking into Mate, you can’t help but feel a sense of lush, velvety joy.  In a prime location of historic Georgetown, it’s one of the best lounges to have sushi and drinks and meet friends not only for happy hour but for the entire night if you want.

As you walk in, you are enveloped by a blood velvet red glow that permeates the place. People mingle, have drinks and laugh a lot. If you go for a bite of Sushi, you can choose to sit in a cozy plush booth or an intimate table with candlelight and surrounded by beautiful spiral lamps. Read more…

AOL Beginning To Be Saved by Googlers?

by
Elias Shams
I have been following AOL on and off since their new CEO, the former Googler, Tim Armstrong took over a year go. It does look like he has been kicking ass and taking names since his take over! The company which has been doubling down on its own local efforts past several months, is now setting up a $10 million venture capital fund to invest in the local space – specifically “local content” services. The new venture fund headed by Jon Brod which operates as part of AOL Ventures will be targeting early-stage startups developing complementary technology and services with a local focus.

Did you hear that DC and NYC startups in “local content”  space? read more…

What Do Clear, Google, And President Obama Have In Common?

by
Elias Shams

They all want to get us  on high-speed broadband. One for profit, I shall call it the wireless company, “Clear”. One for believing access to high-speed broadband is a necessity these days and not a luxury anymore, I shall call it “our President”. And,  one for God knows why, I shall call it “Google”. The good News is more corners of the country will have high-speed Internet access, existing connections would become much faster, and we  will be cruising the Web with 100 Mbps :-)

The Federal Communications Commission just delivered its long-awaited National Broadband Plan to Congress yesterday, with the goal of creating a nationwide communications network connecting more than 90% of U.S. households. You can review part of the 376-page plan here and here. They are both in pdf. read more…

Nowruz Resolution Passed In Washington DC!

by
Kamran Abdi
After all the sad News have been coming out of Iran since the Iranian presidential election last year, the Iranian Washingtonian or better say Iranian American community has something to cheer about today. The House of Representatives passed the Persian New Year day, Nowruz resolution (H.Res.267) yesterday by a vote of 384 to 2. I wonder about the two guys who opposed the resolution.

The organization Iranians might want to thank to is The Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA) who has been working closely with Congressman Michael Honda (CA-15th) since early last year to push for such resolution. read more…

DC Ranked As Top US Retail Market

by
Elias Shams
If one dead company Washingtonians should thank to is Lehman Brothers whose collapse two years ago took the financial market down. Since then, our government has been printing money, the companies have been moving their headquarters to DC, the cost of office spaces has been on the rise in DC beating the NYC, and now this – DC is ranked as top US retail market.

The economic outlook for the Washington, D.C., metro area is improving, with most employment sectors anticipated to expand in 2010, according to the 2010 National Retail Report by commercial real estate investment services firm Marcus & Millichap. Fundamentals will remain healthiest around the D.C. metro’s core; however, tepid demand in outlying submarkets will limit marketwide improvements this year. read more…

Hold Your Horses Baltimore

by Elias Shams
In response to Google announcement last month about their plan to build and deliver high-speed broadband networks to every home in the nation, the city of Baltimore is putting  the local technology entrepreneur Tom Loveland as its volunteer “Google Czar”. Tom, the CEO of IT strategy and application design firm Mind Over Machines will work with the office of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake as the city applies to become one of a small number of test cities for Google’s new ultra high-speed Internet service.

Google has been seeking volunteer cities for their high-speed hookup tests since the announcement. Certainly, the competition between the cities will turn into bidding war soon. Funny thing is all the mayors across our nation have already started creating their Facebook fan pages for this including  City of Rochester with the fan page called “Hey Google, Make Rochester Faster”, Kansas City and Google,  Huntsville, Ala., with 5,729 fans, Ventura, Calif., with 1,320 fans.
