World’s Largest Mobile Phone Health Study Kicks Off

by
Elias Shams
The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Program has announced it will start what is set to be the largest study undertaken into the long term health effects caused by mobile phones on their users.

Given Cancers usually take around a decade to develop and the year 1995 was the time when the usage of mobile phones started picking up, it is about time to conduct such a research study. It’s 5 years overdue, but better than not doing it at all. read more…

Deadliest Predator Week at the Union Station

by
Kamran Abdi
“Deadliest Predator” is an interactive exhibit that educates visitors about the mosquito-borne disease malaria and how this preventable and treatable pandemic can be stopped. The exhibit, at Washington DC’s Union Station the week following World Malaria Day, depicts the history of malaria in the U.S. and how it was eradicated here, while demonstrating that it still infects 250 million people worldwide annually and is a leading killer of children and pregnant mothers in developing nations.

The exhibit is created by international aid group World Vision, which is working to reduce the illness and death caused by malaria in vulnerable communities by providing bed nets and prevention education to households, which along with accessible low-cost treatment can go far towards eliminating the burden of the disease worldwide. read more…

Jon Stewart Stands Up For South Park

by
Elias Shams
The Best of The Daily show for this week wasn’t FOX bashing :-)   Instead, Jon Stewart came to the aid of his Comedy Central family, defending “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for their controversial (and censored) episode in which they portrayed Muhammad. I guess Jon Stewart didn’t get the memo that insane religious idiots have no sense of humor.

The censorship by Comedy Central was meant to protect Parker and Stone, following death threats from radical, NY-based Revolution Muslim which according to Stewart means that while they praise Osama Bin Laden and celebrate 9/11, they have access to our theater district, Jewish delis, and parks. read more…

Vagina Effect Hits Palm

by
Elias Shams
We witnessed how Vagina brought down the most powerful men in the world including our beloved former president, Bill Clinton, the former NY Governor, Elliot Spitzer , the former golf champ, Tiger Woods, and more to be brought down :-) We, men are not the only thing Vagina can bring down. She is even bringing down once known as the coolest gadget and the only smartphone on the planet, Palm.

Palm Smartphone

Just yesterday, I blogged about a recent survey of women dating men based on their smartphones. Those men with Palm were so at the bottom of the list to be desirable by chicks :-( which might explain why HTC also rejected them as their strong potential acquirer.

Poor old Palm has been desperately looking for a buyer for a while. Even after going cap in hand to all the world’s major handset makers, the firm still can’t seem to find a solid buyer. read more…

Facebook DC Connection – CIA

To stay competitive with Google, Facebook is gearing up to pour in more cash into their lobbying branch in Washington, DC as well. Good Time to Buy a House in Washington

by
Kamran Abdi
Interesting column by New York Times economics writer David Leonhardt on why it might be a good time to buy a home in some unlikely parts of the United States.

Leonhardt shows that the rent ratio — the price of the home divided by the estimated annual cost to rent one like it — in many metro districts has fallen enough to signal that it is a good time to consider purchasing a home rather than renting one. Housing market experts believe that if the rent ratio is lower than 20, a home is of good enough value to consider buying. If the number is higher than 20, a purchaser is counting on real estate prices to rise to make up the higher aggregate cost of paying a mortgage. (During the worst of the housing bubble, homebuyers in places like Ft. Myers, Fla., were bidding on homes with sky-high rent ratios in the 40s.) read more…

Honor Flight Landed in Washington, DC

by
Kamran Abdi
More than 100 area World War II veterans were onboard a special flight yesterday as the Honor Flight took off for Washington, DC. The flight gives veterans a free opportunity to visit the nation’s war memorials.

Of those onboard the flight, none had ever seen the WWII memorial, lending a certain amount of credence to Honor Flight Network’s entire purpose – to give those who served the county a chance to visit the nation’s capitol and see the monuments that honor their service and sacrifice. read more…
