Did anyone watch the market today?  Apple’s market capitalization hit $227.1 overtook Microsoft’s $226.3 Billion. As a stock holder of both companies since late 90’s, this is the first time. Congrats Apple!

The Effective Ways to Leverage LinkedIn for Running Small Business

Having tried out literally all the social media channels for my companies and Awesome DC since 2005, I have had the best luck with Google and LinkedIn than others. Twitter, Facebook, youtube, etc. do not even come close to LinkedIn.

Well, since Google is not quite a social media channel yet, I will focus on my LinkedIn experience.  I think other social media channels could be as effective as Linkedin depending on the nature of your business. So, I am not encouraging you to dump other channels. You just need to identify the appropriate channel(s) for your type of company first. That would be another blog post that I will do next. Would you say most Social Employees or Employers?

NetProspex has published some pretty interesting findings about the use of social media by companies and their employees. Each company’s ranking is determined by its employees’ overall social media activity, including the average number of connections across various networks. NetProspex also ranked employees on Twitter by average number of tweets and followers, and compared male and female employees’ social scores.

Looks like Microsoft has an army of employees with Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, what does that mean? Everyone knows that Microsoft doesn’t listen to its customers so this seems backwards? Who are they tweeting to and does it even help sales? Is there any correlation between these graphs and anything business related? Read more of this post

Facebook, their Troubles, and Washington

Facebook has done a lot of good for our society. It has brought people together, and created communities that previously didn’t exist. However, they have been pretty acting pretty naugthy past two years or so.

Mashable recently conducted a survey among their readers regarding their experience with Facebook and their rational for quitting it. The feedback from the users is interesting which I think it  applies to many of us including a few close friend of my own.  Not sure I will quit it anytime soon though.

31% of respondents proclaimed their intention to stick with Facebook, and approximately the same number cited access to personal information as their number-one reason for vamoosing. Read more of this post

Best Qtr for Smartphones since 2006 and that’s just the Beginning

Thanks to the launch of iPhone in 2007, it looks like the year 2010 is going to be a great year for smartphones. According to the technology research firm, Gartner, sales of the smartphones hit 54 million in Q1 of 2010 alone, an increase of 49%.

Gartner said the first quarter had been the strongest ever for smartphone sales since way back in 2006, which indicates people are finally starting to emerge from two years of economic hardship. Indeed, according to the figures, smartphones made up some 17.3% of all handset sales last quarter up 13.6% over Q1 2009.

Google’s Android operating system seems to have caused quite a shake-up and won a victory against rival Microsoft, pipping the Redmond software giant to the post and snatching fourth place in the smartphone operating system hierarchy. Read more of this post

The Truth Behind Washington D.C. Attraction Revealed

Within the first month after I got off the boat from Shiraz to Washington, DC in 1985, I could tell something was very different about DC.  No, it wasn’t the politics, nor the museums, nor the awesome sceneries of Washington, DC. Something else  made me  fall in love with the city and settle here for good – the insane ratio of women to men in DC.  I have been always wondered about the reason behind it  for the past 25 years. I think I’ve  finally found the answer today on May 25th, 2010. Read more of this post

Fab Faux – Live at Lisner, the George Washington University Campus

by
David D’Agostino
“Beatles Tribute Band” doesn’t really do justice to the performances of the Fab Faux. From what I had seen and heard before the show, it was obvious this was not your typical tribute band. First: no wigs, no Black Oyster Pearl Ludwig drum kit, and they’re not even all that cute.  (OK, Jack’s kinda cute and Will has a mop-top).

Second, they sing in their own voices — no phony accents, no vocal mimicry, just straight-ahead interpretations of the lead vocals with transcendent harmonies.

Third, and most important, the music. Except for Paul McCartney’s band, you have never heard (and never will hear) a group that can play the music of the Beatles like the Fab Faux can. Unless you heard The Beatles, and if you did — you didn’t hear them play most of these songs. Read more of this post
