Is Hulu killing Netflix? $10-per-Month for Hulu Plus

Hulu, the video portal joint venture between News Corp., NBC Universal and Disney launched a preview of Hulu Plus, a $9.99-per-month subscription service that will offer full current seasons of TV programs from ABC, Fox and NBC across a range of devices – but is it worth paying a monthly fee?

For $9.99 per month, you’ll get entire series and seasons in high definition, whereas most shows have up to this point only been available a few episodes at a time in standard definition. You’ll also have the option of streaming those episodes on a bunch of new devices, including the iPhone, iPad, PlayStation 3 and select Samsung TVs and Blu)-ray players – and, possibly more later. Who has really been Behind the iPhone success?

Apple sold more than 1.7 million iPhone 4 devices in the first three days of availability  in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Japan.  According to Piper Jaffray and  one survey, more than 77%  of  the iPhone 4 were sold in the U.S., were upgrades and thus would not bolster the carrier’s net customer addition results.

It is even more impressive when you consider the initial pre-order system failures, the device shortages, and the fact that half of the family isn’t even available yet. And most impressive may be that those who bought it in the U.S. were willing to sell their souls to AT&T for another two years.

In support of the new iPhone’s flooding its network, AT&T Mobility claims they have  increased capacity of its 3G network in the New York City area. The updates included the addition of new carriers to “nearly all cell sites in Manhattan and in other areas as needed throughout the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn,” as well as adding a “layer” of precious 850 MHz spectrum to support increased coverage. The carrier has been transitioning portions of its 850 MHz spectrum from its legacy 2G network to its 3G service over the past several years in an attempt to bolster the 3G network’s coverage and capacity. The 3G network originally launched using the carrier’s 1.9 GHz spectrum band. Read more of this post

Great Progress with Mobile DTV Testing in Washington, D.C.

Here is the latest update on Mobile DTV in Washington, D.C. I started covering back in April. The test underway has been going well, signaling that a more widespread launch of the technology is not too far off. The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) started the test in May with 23 channels, and so far has received about 2,800 comments on the service.

Included in the test are the major local broadcast networks, several radio station rebroadcasts, and some retransmissions of secondary and tertiary over-the-air digital channels. OMVC is also testing out premium content, and has included several cable stations including Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC, MTV, and E!, among others.

About 200 testers were outfitted with a specially-modified Samsung Moment and asked to provide feedback on the service. So far about 150 have done so, and the feedback has generally been positive. Read more of this post

FIFA Apologizing for Bad Ref Calls, Reconsidering Using Video Technology

If you watched the World Cup match between England and Germany as well as USA vs Slovenia on TV, you remember the one goal by England and one by  USA were not counted by the referees.  Everybody else counted the goals, but the referees.

Those calls, together with another bad call later that day when the referee missed a clear offside when Argentina took the lead against Mexico, spurred a heated debate about using video technology to aid the refs in football games. It’s about time FIFA needs to catch up with the rest of all worldwide sports by using video technology. I am surprised it took them so long to make such a decision. Read more of this post

American Football vs the World Football

I have been living in the US since 1985 and never understood why American football is called “football” given the ball is not even really a round ball and the players barely touch the ball with their foot. The American football should have been called “handegg” or “Fatball”:-)

The answer is well put by the British comedian, John Cleese. It sounds like American football is not all about sport. The advertisers and sponsors want to orchestrate it like that for profit.

The world football (known as soccer here in America) is the most democratic sport on earth. You just need a ball and a flat surface and you are ready to play. You don’t have to be tall, big, strong (like the players in the American football) to play it. Don’t need any expensive equipment so, rich or poor, anyone can play . A tie game can be as exciting as a win. Read more of this post

“Potomac Fever” Reality Show to be launched in Washington, D.C.

First, there was “The Real World”, then “Top Chef“, then “The Real Housewife of D.C.”, and now another Reality Show  called “Potomac Fever” by Rob Lowe. Given he has always had an affinity for the adventures of young Washingtonians, I think this is a perfect role for him.

Actor Rob Lowe has teamed up with the production company 44 Blue to launch a reality series with the working title “Potomac Fever,” which  will center on real-life aspiring politicos as they look to move up the ranks of power in the nation’s capital.

The news comes less than two weeks after the D.C. season of Bravo’s “Top Chef” opened with the smallest crowd since the first season in March 2006, and a few months after MTV’s long-running “Real World” franchise limped out of Washington with the lowest-rated season in the show’s history. The White House To Double Available Wireless Spectrum

President Obama intends to  double the available amount of wireless communications spectrum over the next 10 years in an effort to keep up with the ever-growing demand for high-speed video and data transmission to cell phones, laptops and other mobile devices. Yes, we can!

The White House yesterday committed the government to auctioning off an additional 500 megahertz of federal and commercial spectrum, citing a “spectrum crunch” as demand increases for services like online video. The details are very similar to his National Broadband Plan announced earlier this year.

Revenue from the spectrum auctions — which would nearly double the amount of commercial spectrum currently available — would be invested in public safety, related job creation and deficit reduction. Read more of this post
