Will the sexy American blonde bombshell save the Finnish Nokia?

After losing their ground to iPhone and Android-based devices for the past two years or so, Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone manufacturer is betting on Pamela’s tits and ass to sell their Nokia N8? The Finnish wireless company has hired her to promote their N8 smartphone. I guess we find out next month when the company will release the phone on September 30.
One of its biggest claims to fame is a 12-megapixel camera capable of recording full HD video.
Nokia’s shares have tumbled by nearly two-thirds. Its profit margins have withered from 15% to 7%. And the firm has all but imploded in America, despite their CEO, Mr. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo’s pledge to conquer the region.
Since 2005, experts in mobile industry started to predict a very gloomy future for the dying giant. While they stick to their legacy phones and are happy with major penetration in the developing countries; read it as high volume low margin domains, other competitors started to target higher margin products including smartphones. Developing countries will be all using smartphones within the next five years anyway.
If Pamela’s assets pull this off for Nokia, the doubt behind whether sex sells or not should be put to rest for good!
My prediction: It will be a major flop if Nokia intends to target the US market. If you are trying to get people, particularly, the new generation to dump their iPhones and Androids, why would you hire a star from the 80’s/90’s era? As far as I know, the type of people using the iPhone, most of them were just too young to remember Pam when she was on top of her fame. Why not hiring someone like Shakira or even Miley Cyrus?
However, if Nokia plans to use Pam for non-US market like Asia, it might be a wise decision though. Pam Anderson, washed up as she may be(pun intended) in the U.S. still has legions of fans worldwide because of that Baywatch – especially in Asia proper. So it makes complete sense that she was selected. It is also (presumably) costing Nokia way less to pay her than hiring a hot ‘bankable’ Star right now.
The marketing part of the game aside, let’s discuss the tech part of the game.
Nokia hasn’t learned anything. It is not about having the biggest feature. Of course apple could put a 12 megapixels too but does the focus and zoom is top notch. Apple decides to tackle does problem before improving the megapixels with new technology.
They decide to improve the screen to make sure you are able to view those pictures correctly. It’s all about details. Unfortunately Nokia choose to boost their features list and put a tagline like the first smartphone in the world with a 12 megapixels camera that able to shoot full HD.
Does the OS is ready for it… fast enough easy to use etc…. if you need Pamela Anderson to sell your phone .. I think you have a huge problem. Your smartphone should be able to sell by itself with a great user experience. At the end, people will compare it with the iphone…….
I can’t wait to do another blog on this around the end of the October about this.
