Washington, D.C. kicks Ass! Not Quite Yet!

Although the three recent studies/charts below  shows our city as the richest, the best-educated, and  fastest growing than any other U.S. state at three times the national average, but as I’ve always been bitching, this is due to a large number of government milking type of businesses in DC Metro.

Once, I see more innovators in DC area, then I truly feel proud of these charts! Till then,  I hate to say it, but Washington DC is mainly the beneficiary of having more Federal employees and government contractors  than any other city in the  nation.  Read more of this post

DC Technology Business Innovation recommendations – Presentation Transcript

The pretty one is me, Jamey is the other one

A few month after Vincent Gray, our new mayor was elected last year,  one of the most awesome Washingtonian entrepreneurs, Jamey Harvey, founder of the DC based startup, Sponto and Marullus Williams, President and CEO of Limbic Systems, the DC based IT solution provider led a group of civic minded, entrepreneurial technologists and investors in a conversation about what we could do to make DC more awesome for Startups. The group included Peter Corbett, Jonathan Aberman, Doug Humphrey, Susan Banta, Julie Silard Kantor, Adam Rubinson, Wolf Ruzicka, Dutch Dunham and me, the awesomizer.

The mayor has declared this to be the technology startup month and he’s hosting a group of tech CEO’s soon to continue this conversation face-to-face.

Thanks to Jamey who put this slide together, here is the summary of what we did. Feel free to share it with those in your network. Read more of this post

The Ass Size: Washington,DC, Virginia, and Maryland VS. Alicante, Paris, and London

Literally, every chair in the cafes across the EU has a nice comfortable thin cushion to sit on. At least those in London,Paris, and Alicante where I regularly travel to.

I rarely see cushion on any chairs in our cafes in the Washington, DC area. They all come with flat hard wood or metal chairs. I have always been wondering about it till now as I’m watching everyone’s ASS in Starbucks, Dupont Circle waiting for my meeting: Read more of this post

Looking for Cheaper Organics And Pretty Chicks? Be At Dupont Circle With Your Fishing Pole!

Those of you new to Awesome Washington DC, looking for a cheaper place than Whole Food for your organic goodies, try Dupont Circle Metro North Exit.

There is farm market in this part of town that has been running for years every Sunday from 8:00 a.m till 1:00 p.m. I just did my food shopping there for $55 that would have cost me around $80 from Whole Food. I guess my photos says it all. It’s fun and it’s usually showered by pretty chicks.  So, guys make sure to bring your fishing poles with you too. Read more of this post

Awesome DC Official Drink! The Rickey

After 128 years, our politicians finally pulled their head out of their ass and agreed on a legislation to recognize “The Rickey” as the native cocktail of  Washington D.C.  The drink was invented in 1883 at a D.C. bar popular with politicians and reporters where the JW Marriott is located now (14 & Pennsylvania ave). At the time the place called Shoomaker’s saloon. The drink is made with gin or whiskey, lime juice and club soda.

Having been on this side of the Atlantic since March, I can’t wait to get back to DC in September and try out the drink :-) Till then, you all enjoy it for me :-)

Mayor-Elect Gray: Please Make DC Awesome For Entrepreneurs

A great blog post by an awesome  entrepreneur friend of mine Daniel Odio-paez, CEO and Co-founder of the DC based startup, PointAbout.

I’d like to use this blog post to argue for incoming mayor Gray and the DC Council to make DC the most entrepreneur-friendly place in the US. That means tax breaks, access to government contracts, support for innovation zones, aggressive access to angel funding, but mostly it just means convincing high profile entrepreneurs from other areas to make the DC area their home.  It shouldn’t be that hard — many SF-based entrepreneurs are from the DC area originally and have family here.  You just have to give them good reasons to come back to DC.
