Mayor-Elect Gray: Please Make DC Awesome For Entrepreneurs

A great blog post by an awesome  entrepreneur friend of mine Daniel Odio-paez, CEO and Co-founder of the DC based startup, PointAbout.

I’d like to use this blog post to argue for incoming mayor Gray and the DC Council to make DC the most entrepreneur-friendly place in the US. That means tax breaks, access to government contracts, support for innovation zones, aggressive access to angel funding, but mostly it just means convincing high profile entrepreneurs from other areas to make the DC area their home.  It shouldn’t be that hard — many SF-based entrepreneurs are from the DC area originally and have family here.  You just have to give them good reasons to come back to DC. Comcast Launches 100 Mbps Internet Service for Businesses in Washington, D.C.

Just a day after Comcast launched their  4G Mobile Internet Service in Washington, D.C., they begun rolling out their 100 Mbps high-speed Internet service to businesses in the city, making the Washington, D.C.  one of the first in the nation to gain access to the company’s new speed tier.

The wideband “Deluxe 100″ service, which initially launched in the Twin Cities, will allow users to download a large 2 GB file (such as a hi-resolution X-ray or graphic design) in about 2.5 minutes. Downloading the same sized file on a typical 1.5 Mbps T1 line would take almost three hours, the company said. The service is available to Comcast Business Class customers for $369.95 per month.

Is XO Bringing Their Old LMDS Back To Life?

by
Elias Shams
XO Communications made an announcement yesterday about the expansion of their  broadband wireless coverage across the Washington, D.C., region with the deployment of a new wireless hub in the Tysons Corner area.  According to the release, the DC expansion is targeted at businesses and enterprises seeking either connectivity or redundancy from 10Mbps to 1Gbps anywhere in the DC metro area, roughly in a polygon bounded by Dulles International Airport, Lanham MD, Rockville and Beltsville MD, and Mount Vernon, Virginia.

I was under the impression they have had the Fixed Wireless present in DC – Northern VA markets for quite some time. Why another announcement? What’s new? read more…

Poor Economy + Shortage Of Entrepreneurs + Young = Jack POT (Perfect Opportunity & Timing)

by Elias Shams
Here is another awesome initiative in DC that is right up my alley. If you are an entrepreneur or student living in the DC area, you may want to put this in your calendar – Ashoka’s Youth Venture and Young Impact, in partnership with a consortium of sponsors, announce the StartUp Scramble DC University Challenge taking place January 29-31st, 2010!

If you are not an entrepreneur, I strongly urge you to consider becoming one fast – particularly if you are a student and just about to graduate. Here is Why:

a) I don’t need to remind you that the current economy and job market is pretty bleak and will probably stay this way throughout 2010. I don’t mean to be pessimistic, in fact I am a very optimistic dude. But this is real. There is no job waiting for you once you graduate. Hope it gets better in 2011.

b) There has been a major shortage of entrepreneurs in our nation’s capital and in other parts of the country these past few years.

c) You are single, with little responsibility or financial burden, so you can afford to forgo a big paycheck for a little while.

Historically, when times are bad for the economy, it can be a great time to start a business. In fact, 16 of the 30 companies that make up the Dow industrial average were started during a recession or depression. These include Microsoft, Disney, McDonald’s, General Electric and Johnson & Johnson. In fact, from what I remember, Although, Google started during the glory days of late 90’s, but it really started kicking ass during the 2001 recession.

Still curious what makes it possible for new companies to thrive when times are so bad? or why should you launch your own company?
