Deutschland Up, Global Productivity Down

As my favorite team in the world cup since childhood, Germany has been kicking ass taking name advancing toward the final, they have been  taking down the global work force productivity down though. Courtesy of  the sales intelligence firm, InsideView, their recent study shows we, the work force of the economy have been goofing off at work since June 11th when the World Cup started.  Given the current economy, this is not a good News. The Best World Cup Goals

At least to me

1. Michael Owen, Argentina vs England, 1998 – Then 18-year-old Michael Owen kicked his way into English hearts in his World Cup debut with this fantastic dash down the pitch against England’s arch (football) enemy, making him a national hero. Read more of this post

FIFA Apologizing for Bad Ref Calls, Reconsidering Using Video Technology

If you watched the World Cup match between England and Germany as well as USA vs Slovenia on TV, you remember the one goal by England and one by  USA were not counted by the referees.  Everybody else counted the goals, but the referees.

Those calls, together with another bad call later that day when the referee missed a clear offside when Argentina took the lead against Mexico, spurred a heated debate about using video technology to aid the refs in football games. It’s about time FIFA needs to catch up with the rest of all worldwide sports by using video technology. I am surprised it took them so long to make such a decision. Read more of this post

American Football vs the World Football

I have been living in the US since 1985 and never understood why American football is called “football” given the ball is not even really a round ball and the players barely touch the ball with their foot. The American football should have been called “handegg” or “Fatball”:-)

The answer is well put by the British comedian, John Cleese. It sounds like American football is not all about sport. The advertisers and sponsors want to orchestrate it like that for profit.

The world football (known as soccer here in America) is the most democratic sport on earth. You just need a ball and a flat surface and you are ready to play. You don’t have to be tall, big, strong (like the players in the American football) to play it. Don’t need any expensive equipment so, rich or poor, anyone can play . A tie game can be as exciting as a win. Read more of this post

What a Sad Day for the US

The soccer buzz spread across Washington, D.C. yesterday. While the game’s rules weren’t always completely understood, fans were plugged in with nervous anticipation. The U.S. advance to the round of 16 had brought out more fans, and more vocal ones. What a sad day it was though.

Having monitored the US team since 1998 World Cup in France when we also lost 2 to 1 to my homeland country of Iran,  I was very optimistic for them to advance this time around. The US team has certainly come a long way since then and they truly deserved to advance. Read more of this post

The Lego on England’s World Cup Gaffe

Hope you watched the USA vs England soccer game over the weekend. Our goal was just classic and hilarious. As a former goalkeeper myself back in college, I can’t imagine how sh*tty Robert Green, the English Goalkeeper must have felt after losing the control of  the ball  like that.

LEGO has undoubtedly become a hot viral video trend lately, with everything from star Wars to Lady Gaga being immortalized in the form of interlocking, plastic blocks. Read more of this post

World Cup and Gay Parade took Dupont Circle by Storm

The Mini World Cup in Dupont Circle – USA 1 : England 1.

This was the highest World Cup fever I had ever seen among the Washingtonians since 1985 when I moved here in DC.  It is about time :-)   Soccer has seemingly gripped a good portion of the nation’s attention. Thousands gathered to watch U.S. take on stiff ass Brits in FIFA World Cup  around the circle and the surrounding Bars and clubs.

The event was organized by Michael Lipin and friend Aaron DeNu, the same men who organized the massive snowball fight, also in Dupont Circle, during the February Blizzard of 2010. Dupont Festival, which aims to organize public outdoor activities in Dupont Circle, also played a key role in organizing the event. Read more of this post

Can we beat the Brits? Yes! We Can!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will kick off next week in South Africa. What I am most excited, is our June 12th match against the Brits. I think we have the potential to surprise the hell out of them like we did 1-0 in 1950 what has since been known as the “Miracle on Grass.” :-)

We are in Group C playing against the Brits, Algeria, and Slovenia. Read more of this post
