Sponto Gearing up to Awesomize Colleges starting with the ones around Awesome DC

Sponto is a mobile party detection app for college students built by one of the coolest DC entrepreneur, Jamey Harvey who I know since Web 1.0 era. Up until last week Sponto was only available to students at the University of Maryland where it’s been burning up the campus.

I wish they were around when I was going to college, because essentially what it does is tell you where all the free food, booze and hot babes (hot dudes like me in your case ladies ;-) ) are near you!

Their app has enabled The GWU (my Alma Mater) as well as American University, Georgetown, Howard, Catholic, UDC, Catholic, Trinity, Gallaudet and the Corcoran School of Art.  If you’re a student at one of these schools you can register for Sponto now and start sharing parties and events. Awesome Washington, D.C. 50 Years Ago [Photos]

H Street, NE, at 15th Street

Some recently discovered Awesome photographs show what commuting was like three generations ago in Washington, D.C. area. wow! looking at the photos, I feel so young :-)

The photos from the 1940s, 50s and ’60s, released by DDOT show Georgetown as a factory town with smokestacks and industrial yards, and Rosslyn with just a few one-story buildings and some dirt roads.

Another photo shows Connecticut Avenue, just south of Dupont Circle, with street cars entering their own tunnels in the center of the road. Others show Tenley Circle nearly devoid of traffic, and H Street NE before the riots, when it was a vibrant commercial district. Read more of this post

Apple is finally opening their first retail store in Washington, D.C. this Friday at 5 p.m. The store includes a paneled glass storefront that echoes the entrances to neighboring properties.

Their store — located at 1229 Wisconsin Ave. NW. in Georgetown — will join other area locations in Bethesda, Arlington, McLean, Reston, Fairfax, Columbia and Annapolis. The opening will be just in time for the release of the new — will join other area locations in Bethesda, Arlington, McLean, Reston, Fairfax, Columbia and Annapolis. The opening will be just in time for the release of the new iPhone 4, set to debut on June 24. Apple operates more than 200 retail stores nationwide.

Given how the Georgetown economy has been going south past year or so, let’s hope the new Apple store attracts more shoppers to Georgetown and get them to do a little more shopping in the area.

The “Jonas Brothers” band, Kevin,Joe,and Nick were recently spotted out in Washington, D.C.  to greet their adoring fans outside their Georgetown hotel. They were currently on their way to the White House. They acted very gracious by smiling, waving, and taking pictures with their fans.

Two days ago, the Jonas Brothers performed a free concert at the Warner Theater for their fans in conjunction with Live Nation, which I meant to cover them on Awesome DC, but got distracted by other incoming News :-) Read more of this post

Washington DC 2010 Jazz Festival

The DC Jazz Festival is the largest music festival in our Nation’s Capital, incorporating 20-plus venues and more than 100 performances into just under two weeks of fun-lovin’, toe-tappin’ good times.

The DC Jazz Festival is an odd bird. Scattered like chicken feed by date, venue, time and price, you couldn’t be blamed for saying it’s a bit all over the place. Confounding the issue, all of the events are organized into their own sponsored cubbies. You can actually attend several shows without ever getting a larger sense of “The DC Jazz Festival”. Washington DC Finding Fashion Inspiration From the Bottom Up

by
Kamran Abdi
If you haven’t been in Georgetown or Mazza Gallerie for a while, I suggest you make the trip this weekend. I am glad I was dragged into the two areas by a friend last weekend after eight month. Ton of new stores have opened.  DC is certainly showing signs of a cutting-edge fashion leap where the kitten heel meets the pavement.

The independent boutiques are strutting in with hot, sassy footwear that truly seems revolutionary. It’s all the more impressive because it’s happening in fashion-challenged Washington, D.C., not New York or Italy. read more…
