The relatively Unknown Companies behind Mobile Computing

Thanks again to Steve Jobs and his invention of iPhone, it is amazing to see how far we have come and how integral mobile devices have become in our daily life.

Although, Apple, Google, RIM, and HTC have been the major players in taking us toward the mobile computing away from Desktop computing (not quite yet), but there are a few other companies behind the mobile computing technology you may want to know.  In fact, I would say they are the ones reinventing the way we think about mobile. Sprint Nextel Clearwire Unveil More WiMAX Market Expansion

Either somebody at Sprint Nextel/Clearwire is on crack or all the recent negative reports about the WiMAX are baseless. Sprint Nextel and partner Clearwire continued their full-court WiMAX press yesterday announcing a trio of new markets where service is available as well as a new device set to launch later this year. If most of the reports indicates the decline in growth for WiMAX, why would companies like Sprint Nextel and Clearwire continue investing billions $$$ in it?

Both companies are now offering WiMAX service in Salt Lake City; St. Louis; and Richmond, Va., pushing their total market coverage to around 40 markets. The Sprint Nextel offering is marketed under its “4G” brand, while the Clearwire service is marketed under its “Clear” brand. Read more of this post

The Good the Bad the Ugly and the Bitch

by Elias Shams
Thanks to Apple for their iPhone phenomena which has transformed the old fashion mobile phones to our mini computing devices in four years which explains why everyone is after them – from the software giant, Microsoft to the search engine giant, Google to the mobile handset vendor giant, HTC. The War is getting bad, ugly, and bitchy :-) see more…

HP Vs Vagina over Palm – HP Wins

by
Elias Shams
I guess Vagina is not as powerful as I thought it would be.

Referring to one of my latest post about the Vagina effect on Palm, HP just announced that it would acquire smartphone maker Palm, in a deal valued at $1.2 billion.

Under the terms, HP will pay about $5.70 per share for Palm, whose stock price closed at $4.64 on Tuesday. read more…

Vagina Effect Hits Palm

by
Elias Shams
We witnessed how Vagina brought down the most powerful men in the world including our beloved former president, Bill Clinton, the former NY Governor, Elliot Spitzer , the former golf champ, Tiger Woods, and more to be brought down :-) We, men are not the only thing Vagina can bring down. She is even bringing down once known as the coolest gadget and the only smartphone on the planet, Palm.

Palm Smartphone

Just yesterday, I blogged about a recent survey of women dating men based on their smartphones. Those men with Palm were so at the bottom of the list to be desirable by chicks :-( which might explain why HTC also rejected them as their strong potential acquirer.

Poor old Palm has been desperately looking for a buyer for a while. Even after going cap in hand to all the world’s major handset makers, the firm still can’t seem to find a solid buyer. read more…

It was all about Smartphones, Wi-Fi, Enterprise, and Security in Barcelona

by Elias Shams
Not sure how many of you made it to the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. In case you missed the show, here is the summary.

I had a chance to meet with many companies there and learned more about their new tech gadgets during my three days trip. I meant to write this a week after my return, but got bombard by ton of other articles that required more immediate attention, iPad was certainly one of them. Finally,  got a chance last night to sit down in my favorite local coffee shop Tryst to summarize my report.

There were indeed several noteworthy product announcements with significant enterprise implications. In addition to Android and Windows Phone 7, there was big emphasis on new mobile security solutions for enterprises. Referring to my last article about the smartphones for enterprise, this was a perfect show.

This is going to be a long report. So, let me give you some mojo first. This dude is one of my favorite DJs. I go to most of his parties every time  he is in DC. In fact, he will be in FUR this Sat. So, before you continue, if you are a club manic like me, watch this first. Otherwise skip this clip:

With the help from a few colleagues who were also in Barcelona with me, here is the list: Read more…

Ta-dah!!! Google’s Nexus One Finally Landed! Translation?

Unlike other mobile handset vendors, Google offers many other goodies online – search, Google wave, Google Voice, email, and more. So, If their handset is as good as they claim it is, I believe they will significantly shake up the Smartphone business model.

Referring to my previous coverage of the Google’s Nexus One Smartphone, the phone is finally out with their own Android mobile operating system and ready for you to purchase on Google’s website. Ironically, the release is exactly on 25th year anniversary of my arrival to the great city of Washington, DC. Not sure it means anything though :-) maybe they send me a free phone? :-)

Price tag: $179 with a two-year T-Mobile contract, or on its own for $529 without signing on for a specific carrier service; the Nexus One will also be available from Verizon Wireless and Vodafone sometime in the spring. Any GSM network SIM card can be inserted into the device. Such flexibility may prove attractive to enterprises with widely dispersed or multinational workers.

The phone is designed in close partnership with manufacturer HTC. It features a 3.7-inch OLED display; a trackball with multi-colored LED that will be used for notifications; a 5-megapixel camera; stereo Bluetooth; and active noise cancellation. It will offer voice activation for all text fields on the phone, including for creating email and Twitter status updates.

Google plans to rock your World In 2010 – Introducing their first own “Nexus One” Smartphone

Referring to my previous coverage, It seems to me the iPhone and all other type of smartphone besides Google’s, might become fossilized by the end of this year or latest by the end of 2011. Unless, they come up with some sort of ass kicking new innovation like the one Apple intends to introduce at the end of this month – their new device that look like a large iPhone and will have a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a virtual keyboard, and videoconferencing and e-book support.

Google is gearing up to rock your world this coming Tuesday Jan 5th at a private event which is right around the same time as CES festivities kicking off in Las Vegas. They will be launching their first ever owned smartphone called Nexus One. It is designed to run Google’s Android mobile operating system which was released over a year and half ago.
But wait, there’s more
