Infographic on iPhone Popularity vs. others

BillShrink has created an awesome looking infographic that puts many facts about the iPhone into perspective. Although, it looks like Apple’s overall share in the mobile phone market is still very low compared to giants such as Nokia and Samsung, but what counts is net profit.

Apple is squeezing more profit from its 2% than Nokia from its 40%. So no, Apple is not concerned at all. I don’t think Apple is concerned about its 2% overall market share. They’ve chosen a niche – and the most profitable one at that – and absolutely nailed it. Read more of this post

And no! they weren’t all iPhone. Others have been also kicking ass taking names! Read more of this post

Smartphone App for Eye Exams by MIT

Researchers at MIT Media Labs have developed an application called NETRA — Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment — for  eye exams. The App produces results comparable to standard tests performed by optometrists.

The patient looks into a lens and uses arrow keys on the phone to make sets of green and red parallel lines overlap. The phone then changes the angle of the lines, asking the user to the same test again. After performing the task eight times with each eye, a process that takes about two minutes, the application processes the results and spits out prescription data.

NETRA is designed for doctors in developing countries that may not otherwise have access to expensive ophthalmological equipment for eye exams. Read more of this post

Great Progress with Mobile DTV Testing in Washington, D.C.

Here is the latest update on Mobile DTV in Washington, D.C. I started covering back in April. The test underway has been going well, signaling that a more widespread launch of the technology is not too far off. The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) started the test in May with 23 channels, and so far has received about 2,800 comments on the service.

Included in the test are the major local broadcast networks, several radio station rebroadcasts, and some retransmissions of secondary and tertiary over-the-air digital channels. OMVC is also testing out premium content, and has included several cable stations including Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC, MTV, and E!, among others.

About 200 testers were outfitted with a specially-modified Samsung Moment and asked to provide feedback on the service. So far about 150 have done so, and the feedback has generally been positive. Read more of this post

First Android Based Tablet Coming

Samsung may release their first tablet  by mid or late Summer.

The tablet, tentatively identified as the S-Pad, purportedly boasts Google’s Android operating system, a 7-inch AMOLED capacitive display, 3G, WiFi, and USB ports.

It will be the first time an Android based tablet has sported an AMOLED capacitive display. Samsung is certainly well known for its high quality AMOLED screens, which the firm claims are about five times brighter than the average LCD screen and purportedly perform some 20% better when used outside.

It is still unclear which version of Android the tablet will run, and what the processor inside it would be, but according to Korean news site Chosun.com, consumers can expect to see the S-Pad as early as August. Read more of this post

It was all about Smartphones, Wi-Fi, Enterprise, and Security in Barcelona

by Elias Shams
Not sure how many of you made it to the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. In case you missed the show, here is the summary.

I had a chance to meet with many companies there and learned more about their new tech gadgets during my three days trip. I meant to write this a week after my return, but got bombard by ton of other articles that required more immediate attention, iPad was certainly one of them. Finally,  got a chance last night to sit down in my favorite local coffee shop Tryst to summarize my report.

There were indeed several noteworthy product announcements with significant enterprise implications. In addition to Android and Windows Phone 7, there was big emphasis on new mobile security solutions for enterprises. Referring to my last article about the smartphones for enterprise, this was a perfect show.

This is going to be a long report. So, let me give you some mojo first. This dude is one of my favorite DJs. I go to most of his parties every time  he is in DC. In fact, he will be in FUR this Sat. So, before you continue, if you are a club manic like me, watch this first. Otherwise skip this clip:

With the help from a few colleagues who were also in Barcelona with me, here is the list: Read more…
