With the rapid growth of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and now Google+, businesses around the world have incorporated the use of such platforms as part of their marketing and branding strategy. While there is no dispute that these platforms offer exposure to a broad population, it has been a struggle for these platforms to demonstrate a compelling ROI to the business community. The GM decision to pull out their Ads from Facebook that was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal is just one of the recent example.

According to the latest survey by Hubspot, only LinkedIn has demonstrated the ability to convert traffic to leads for the B2B community that is on par with “traditional” marketing avenues by demonstrating a 2.6% conversion rate. A few month after Yurie systems, my first startup employer was sold to Lucent for a cool $1.23 B, as employee number 8th, I cashed out my stock options and lunched telezoo.com back in 1999. telezoo.com was the first B2B social networking site on the web years before myspace and Facebook of the world. I remember I ended up hiring at least ten sales guy and wasted a third of our series A funding, a cool $1 m on advertising to get the attention of the companies. We rarely managed to get 300 companies to utilize the site.

Getting the companies to leverage the power of social networking to market their solution offerings and get engaged with their existing and potential clients online was something totally unheard of and premature. Those of you who still think social media is a about poking, wake up!

Even, Mr. private Brad Pitt finally bowed to power of social media. He just set up his page on Google+. Given his passion for New Orleans, not surprisingly, his first social media post was about his Make It Right venture in New Orleans.

“Making a big announcement later this week about an event in New Orleans in March to raise money to build safe, sustainable homes for disadvantaged families and disabled veterans.

The big announcement released last night is this:
“On March 10 at Hyatt Regency New Orleans, Brad Pitt and Ellen DeGeneres will host “A Night to Make It Right” with special guests Randy Jackson and performances by Rihanna, Sheryl Crow, Seal and local favorite Dr. John and friends.
