T-Mobile: America’s New Bastard

Voogle
(the pact between Google and Verizon Wireless) hasn’t killed the Net Neutrality yet, but many wireless carriers have already started their abuse. The new bastard is “T-Mobile” which happens to be my own carrier too :-( Their case is yet classic example of a totally arbitrary decision by a carrier to block text message calls between consumers and organizations they want to communicate with. Our Smartphone as our Credit Card?

Finally, our carriers have decided to join the 21st century to get on with the over due project that has been going on in the Europe and many of the Asian countries for the past three years. According to Bloomberg AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile are all working on a smart-phone payment system using Near Field Communications (NFC) that would displace credit and debit cards. Is this for Real? Sprint to consider LTE?

The battle between WiMAX and LTE is getting very interesting and frankly very confusing – at least to me.

It was just last month Sprint rolled out their WiMAX in a handful of new metropolitan areas including Washington, D.C. According to Financial Times, Sprint is now  considering an LTE strategy that could pave the way to a merger with T-Mobile USA. After spending all those $$$ Billion on WiMAX?

The talk of Sprint switching to an LTE based 4G future gives more credence to the ever circling rumors that T-Mobile USA parent Deutsche Telekom is considering a merger of its #4 T-Mobile USA division with Sprint, which currently is a distant number 3 in the U.S. market. In the past, the differing 3G technologies (CDMA vs. UMTS) made a merger seem unlikely, but if both were to plan ahead for LTE, then the two companies’ futures would be a bit more in step. The World Health Organization (WHO) released data on the largest study to date on whether mobile phone use causes an increased risk of brain cancer, finding yet again the usual results — that there is no increased risk of cancer, but saying more research is needed.

The Interphone Study Group published results of the analyses of brain tumor risk (for glioma and meningioma) related to mobile phone use. The study, which included 2,708 glioma cases and 2,409 meningioma cases, was conducted in 13 countries over a 10-year period. Read more of this post

World’s Largest Mobile Phone Health Study Kicks Off

by
Elias Shams
The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Program has announced it will start what is set to be the largest study undertaken into the long term health effects caused by mobile phones on their users.

Given Cancers usually take around a decade to develop and the year 1995 was the time when the usage of mobile phones started picking up, it is about time to conduct such a research study. It’s 5 years overdue, but better than not doing it at all. read more…

Elias Shams
In addition to the product roll out and announcements in CTIA we blogged earlier this week, we missed to include one major announcement from T-Mobile which I think it has already effected those Washingtonians with T-Mobile.

The company  announced they were going to push faster HSPA+ wireless broadband service outside of their initial test market of Philly. Users in Washington DC area should be seeing the faster wireless broadband speed.

Those of you with T-Mobile in DC area, let us know if you have already noticed any difference. read more…

What Happens In Vegas, Certainly Will Not Stay In Vegas This Time

by Elias Shams

I decided to take a break from Awesome Washington DC last week. So, I headed to Vegas for the CTIA event.

Ton of  awesome wireless gadgets and technologies were unveiled during the event.  Those of you couldn’t make  the trip, here are some of the highlights that made the most buzz.

As a classic geek, first thing first – looked for the booths with the best looking babes. They were all fantastic looking, one hotter than the other one :-) The angels were all over the place.  Surprisingly, there were more brunettes than blondes this year  which I like :-)

As for the wireless phones, starting with Sprint and their glorious  4G WiMAX initiative:

More WiMAX markets
