We’ve Gone Crazy Over Smartphone As Speedy Gonzales over Cheese

A new report from  Gartner shows the Worldwide mobile phone sales has totaled 417 million units during the third quarter, up 35% from last year. Similar story for the smartphones – the sales grew 96% to 81 million and accounted for nearly 20% of all mobile sales during the quarter.

There should be no surprise here. Given the smartphones new design since the inception of iPhone and Android, this was expected. We are literally doing many of our computing with the smartphones these days.

Smartphone OS providers have entered a period of accelerated platform evolution, stimulated by more regular product releases, new platform entrants and new device types. Read more of this post

Hearst Way or News Corp way?

Although, I have been dealing with the online media companies like Washingtonpost.com, NYTimes.com, CNN.com for the past 4 years and have been a blogger for almost a year, I am still puzzled with the right model for these companies.

Last week, I attended the IAB Mixx Conference & Expo in Manhattan, Hearst Vice Chairman and CEO Frank Bennack discussed his plans in changing landscape of media. His plans are quite different than News Corp.  How could two well known and successful giants have such a disagreement on the right model? Although Hearst is still seeking ways to get audiences to pay for content, unlike News Corp, Hearst has no plans to put up paywalls around the online News sites. Read more of this post

Cisco Unveils Business Tablet – Cius

Early this week, Cisco unveiled its first tablet running Google Android operating system  with full video conferencing, email and media access called  The Cius, a 7-inch HD business collaboration device designed with the business user in mind.

Yes, A business collaboration device which is missing in iPad and I’d say in all other tablets to be launched by other vendors sometimes this year.  The device will be part of Cisco’s  Communications package that they sell to business users. Read more of this post

The Jetsons might become a Reality soon

Remember the Jetsons? Thanks to apple, Google, Microsoft, and mobile handset vendors, their life style might be  a few years a way :-) Here are the first series of gadgets that are taking us to that direction:

1. Entertainment: Google TV: Starting with the first one Google TV that we covered last month.

Google TV integrates TV and web content to create one, smooth experience. The product is more robust than web TV or Apple TV, and it’s not just a browser or a guide. This device and software will let you search for and navigate both TV and online content. You’ll be able to download and run apps from your TV and control your TV from your Android smartphone. PC still Rules

With all the hypes and buzzes about smartphones , macs, and tablets, it doesn’t look like PCs go anywhere anytime soon. According to market researcher Gartner, Worldwide PC shipments this year are projected to increase 22 percent from a year ago to 376.6 million units, while spending is expected to rise 12 percent to $245.4 billion.

Microsoft says it has sold more than 100 million licenses for Windows 7 since the software came out in October, making it the company’s fastest-selling PC operating system. In contrast, Apple and other makers of tablet devices will ship an estimated 10 million of the devices this year.

Intel Corp. executives assert that the rise of portable computers has reinvigorated PC sales. Instead of one desktop a household, there can now be one portable computer for each person in a home. The chip giant says netbooks — the small, low-priced relative of laptop computers — have sold more quickly in the past two years than the iPhone, iPod or other recently released high-tech products.

Nor do Apple products dominate their markets. The Macintosh accounted for less than 4% of global PC sales in 2009, while its share of smartphone operating system stood at 14.4%, in third place in a market led by Nokia Corp., with 46.9%, Gartner said.

To Own or Not to Own the Damn iPad?

Here is another report validating my previous coverage about whether iPad is a necessity or not.

The consumer electronics shopping site, Retrevo is reporting that 53% of about 1000 respondents surveyed in their Pulse Report are not interested in buying any type of tablet.

More than 20% of those surveyed — or one in five — said they plan to buy an iPhone this year. When it comes to the iPad, however, 52% of those who have yet to purchase one say that they don’t want one, and 38% find it too pricey. Only 10% indicated that they are waiting for a good excuse before they buy one. Read more of this post

First Android Based Tablet Coming

Samsung may release their first tablet  by mid or late Summer.

The tablet, tentatively identified as the S-Pad, purportedly boasts Google’s Android operating system, a 7-inch AMOLED capacitive display, 3G, WiFi, and USB ports.

It will be the first time an Android based tablet has sported an AMOLED capacitive display. Samsung is certainly well known for its high quality AMOLED screens, which the firm claims are about five times brighter than the average LCD screen and purportedly perform some 20% better when used outside.

It is still unclear which version of Android the tablet will run, and what the processor inside it would be, but according to Korean news site Chosun.com, consumers can expect to see the S-Pad as early as August. Read more of this post

Google TV is ALIVE!

In partnership with Intel, Sony, and Logitech, Google officially unveiled Google TV at its Google I/O conference today – integrated devices seamlessly synchronized using the Internet.  Smooth! Very smooth!

And No! Google is not going to replace your cable or satellite box, but work alongside it. The goal is to be able to view web content and television content side-by-side from the same interface. Read more of this post

The New iPad Commercial Unveiled

by Elias Shams

Apple just unleashed their new iPad commercial titled “What is iPad” upon the world and it is Awesome :-)

The imagery and composition of the shots does make this one of Apple’s coolest ads in a long time.

The thing that is missing in that commercial is mentioning the price. I can buy a full-sized laptop for the price of the 3G iPad. That cemented the fact that I wasn’t going to get one. I’d love to because I love my iPod and my MacBook Pro, but… no. Read more of this post

Our Dependence on Smartphones More Vital than Sex

by
Elias Shams
Interesting  study I just reviewed from cloud-based business phone system provider, RingCentral. The survey which has similar message as one of my previous post on the subject of our addiction to the smartphones was conducted among small to medium-sized business customers in the U.S. The study shows the importance of the smartphone in daily and business life was reiterated.

The study, which surveyed nearly 400 customers, showed that smartphones are taking on the defacto role in business communication. read more…
