Industries that may never recover in the US

Crap! the field that I received both my BS and MS from, is one of them – Telecom. Thank God! I switched to Internet and social media early 2000 :-)

24/7 Wall St examined the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ “Employment Situation Summary,” and a number of sources that show layoffs by company and sector. The weakness in these sectors will make it harder for the private industry, even aided by the government, to bring down total unemployment from 9.6% and replace the 8.3 million jobs lost during the recession.

Here is the list of the 10 job categories that will not recover: Read more of this post

Telecom Sector Shedding Jobs Big time

Crap! The sector that I put my soul into it from 1986 till early 2000, telecom sector is shedding jobs. Thank God I switched focus from telecom to Internet and social media once I left Yurie and started my first Internet company, Telezoo.  My heart still belongs to telecom though.  I’ve been doing my best to keep myself up-to-date with the latest innovation in the space :-)

The telecommunications sector had 4,600 fewer jobs in May than in April, employing 929,500 positions in May. However, the year-over-year employment figures show a loss of 47,800 jobs since May 2009 – a nearly 4.9% increase, according to new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Drilling down a little further, it appears that most of those job losses occurred in the wireline segment. From April 2009 to April 2010, 60,000 jobs were lost in the wireline category. (Those statistics lag a month behind the overall category segment so April statistics are the most recent available. Also, the figures are not seasonally adjusted.) In the wireless subsector, 200 jobs were lost from April 2009 to April 2010. The wireless sector accounted for 194,200 jobs in April 2010. Read more of this post

If You Connect The Dots, The Employment will Come

I am no economist to have a solution for our unemployment situation. But, as a technologist in telecom and social media space, here is my two cents to tackle the problem for DC area in telecom space:

You want to stimulate productivity and job growth in DC area? Get Sprint and Clearwire to deploy more broadband in our region first! I don’t see them doing enough.

I have been closely monitoring the effect of broadband deployment on output and employment for the past few years. There are numerous clear evidence out there supporting that broadband indeed has economic benefits and has boosted up the employment in the regions where it was deployed. We have the White House, the Congress, New America Foundation and their Open Technology Initiative, Clearwire, and Sprint in our backyard. So, why haven’t they been able to connect the dots to boost up the employment of the region?

First, let me start with some facts I have been experiencing and reading from various sources such as The Brookings Institution and  GigaOm:

Dear beloved Wireless Carriers, Please go Green and take us with you

This post is not really a Washington, DC thing unless you are in the telecom space or you lobby for a telecom carrier. The fact is that all the US telecom and mobile service providers have a strong lobby in our nation’s capital, I figured that I would give them and you my 2 cents on telecom operators and the path they should take to go GREEN. I am a telecom geek anyway!

So, if you are a wireless operator or you are lobbying for them, I hope you are taking notice.

I’ve been following this for years since my virginity broke at the age of 22. Not sure what the connection was, but, yes 22! depressing :-( isn’t it? Not the non-green thing, the virgin till 22 thing :-( Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a retard or geek in my teen. The thing is, I was 13 when I realized girls were different than boys :-( By the time, I was gonna a do something about it, an Islamic revolution happened…Then, there was a war with Iraq… Believe me sir! I knocked on every door – cat, dog, goat, every door! nothing!!! So, I was around 21 1/2 when I got off the boat, landed in this great new country of mine, USA, and finally… :-) It was a beautiful goat in a barn in some ville town in West Virginia on July 28, 1985 at 2:38:45 p.m EST. No wonder they say Virginia for lovers! I still carry her picture in my wallet. Here she is :-) aaah…Just look at that smile —>

Anyway, back to the green technology. This has been a very interesting topic since the first Earth Day in 1970 when I was only a little boy. However, momentum behind environmentally friendly public policy and business practices has dramatically picked up over the past 15 year or so. There has been more focus on it since the rise of Obama administration in our beloved Washington, DC. Not to mention the global recognition of the need to protect the environment for future generations has also increasingly become a central issue that is now shaping behaviors in both the public and private sectors.

The good news is, subscribers of all age groups are now expressing awareness of and interest in ecofriendly device and service incentives. Such issues were not even a talking point a couple of years back. According to a report by ABI Research, almost half of North American mobile consumers are likely to be influenced by suppliers’ green credentials when buying telecom services or devices. Of 1,000 respondents:

- 41 percent said they would be significantly more likely to buy services from telecom providers with green credibility,
- 45 percent said they would be more likely to buy devices from telecom companies that are seen as green.

Respondents were asked whether they would be more likely to buy mobile services or mobile handsets from an operator with “green” initiatives, described as one that “gives money to organizations seeking to help the environment, actively employs programs that reduce its carbon footprint and buys network equipment from green equipment vendors.”

It Is Official – Google Got A Major Hard-on For Wireless Carriers

It didn’t even take 12 hours from my last post about Google’s plans to take on iPhone, telecom carriers, Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL that I just heard another juicy News related to that. Based on what I was just told by a few friends who work at Google, their company might be able to take on a few the wireless carriers even earlier than I had predicted.

Apparently, Google handed out a new type of smartphone called Nexus One to their employees just a few days ago – Software, Hardware, the Operating Systems and listen to this, the backbone wireless network are all made by Google! Double WOW! So, yes, it will be a Google brand smartphone that could really hurt wireless carriers. It is a good News for us, the consumer regardless. The phone has a larger screen. The touchscreen device uses the new version 2.1 of Google‘s Android operating system. Other manufacturers also using Android operating system include Samsung and Motorola, and the DROID on Verizon Wireless last month.

Not quite sure when their phone is going to be released to the market, but certainly, I will stay on top of it and keep you all posted. Watch this News. They have their own carrier as supposed to partnering with an exiting wireless carrier – like T-mobile or Verizon!!! Have no idea how they got their own wireless backbone infrastructure. Will find out.

Hey Google Androidian of Washington! Over 20,000 Apps For Your Android Phone Out There

I heard about Google Android phone (an iPhone competitor) over a year ago and, I ended up buying one:-) Awesome phone BTW!

Then, I heard about Google Wave (an email, SMS, twitter, and facebook competitor). I tried to get a beta account, not much luck. It is due to be released next year.

Then, it came Google Voice and recently their 911 call functionality. I got that that one too :-)

It is obvious where Google is heading. It seems to me, they plan to take on everyone – Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, my fat Mama, and telecom companies. Well, taking on Apple, Yahoo, and Microsoft has been going on for past several years or so. Taking on the telecom companies where my educational and half of professional background is from, WOW! That is amazing! Thanks to the power of Internet and Voice over IP.

Certainly, 2010 is going to be an awesome year for Google – particularly for their Android operating system. Because, there are now 20,000 apps available for you to download from their AndroLib site and it is growing fast. Based on all other goodies they offer compare to their competitors, I won’t be surprised in a few years Apple gets out of mobile phone business, Microsoft shuts down their newly launched Bing decision search engine, AOL and half of present telecom service providers close down for good. It will be fascinating to watch their war with iPhone of Apple. Note that Apple is just about a mobile phone and computer operating system, computer, and internet browser. Google has a couple of those items plus search, google wave and google voice. You own the search and telecom, you own the world. Besides, Google Android is now on many more handset than Apples’.

What’s even more fascinating, is how Google took many of the other traditional mobile phone companies and their operating systems providers like Windows Mobile and Symbian totally off guard and quick. I think they did a fantastic job playing Trojan Horse of the 21st Century.
