The Future of Tysons Corner & The Dulles Corridor

With the Fairfax Board’s passing of the Tysons Corner land-use plan and zoning ordinance and with construction well underway on the Dulles Corridor Rail, the commercial real estate community is buzzing about development that will shape the region for decades. The area is expected to attract twice the jobs and five times the residents, thereby requiring new office, retail, residential, and other development.

That being said, there is an event in Tysons Corner on July 29 discussing the objectives of the Tysons and Dulles plans will materialize over the coming years. What are current thoughts & plans for development around planned rail stations? How will development differ between the Tysons area and government-owned land in the Dulles Corridor area? Will large urban mixed-use projects be seen through to completion amongst current financing constraints? How much retail will the area be able to sustain? Read more of this post

Is XO Bringing Their Old LMDS Back To Life?

by
Elias Shams
XO Communications made an announcement yesterday about the expansion of their  broadband wireless coverage across the Washington, D.C., region with the deployment of a new wireless hub in the Tysons Corner area.  According to the release, the DC expansion is targeted at businesses and enterprises seeking either connectivity or redundancy from 10Mbps to 1Gbps anywhere in the DC metro area, roughly in a polygon bounded by Dulles International Airport, Lanham MD, Rockville and Beltsville MD, and Mount Vernon, Virginia.

I was under the impression they have had the Fixed Wireless present in DC – Northern VA markets for quite some time. Why another announcement? What’s new? read more…

Surgically Implanted Web Under Our Skin On The Way

by Elias Shams
JiWire who serves Ads through public Wi-Fi spots in places like airports, coffee shops and hotels recently released an interesting stat. I just finished reviewing them. The stat is about how quickly accessing Wi-Fi via our smartphones is on the rise which confirms one of my earlier posts about  the Web of the future being truly mobile and possibly surgically implanted subcutaneously under our skin :-)

According to their recent Wi-Fi study:
. 56% of Wi-Fi connections are from mobile devices like the iPhone, the iPod touch, and Android smartphones.
. Public Wi-Fi hotspots grew in ubiquity by 21.9% in 2009,
. Half of public Wi-Fi spots are free.
. 49% of mobile Wi-Fi users make online purchases on the go.
. Amazon and eBay were unsurprisingly named two of the most popular online shopping Read more…

Southeast Venture Conference (SEVC) is back in Washington, DC again :-)

So, entrepreneurs, angel investors, and VCs, it is party time! SEVC will be in town again in Feb of next year! I just hope you all get something out of it this year. I attended the one last year 2008 and I did not hear much of positive stuff about it. I am sure economy had a lot to do with it. Not that we are doing any better this year. It won’t hurt to attend. I spoke to a few local VCs about the event. Surprisingly, despite the decrease in worldwide venture funding over the past year or so, they are highly positive about future investing in the Southeast region. So, if you can afford $590 registration fee, why not? However, it might cost you only $390 if you register by Jan 22 or $490 if you register from Jan 23rd through February 23rd. You can register here.

The event will be held at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, Virginia on Feb 24-25, 2010. Those of you non-Washingtonians, here is the hotel information you can contact.

This one will be the Fourth Annual Southeast Venture Conference. They will feature market relevant investor and executive panels, exclusive networking opportunities, featured speakers and dozens of the region’s top private technology firms presenting to a national audience of venture capitalists, investment bankers and private equity investors.

The Southeast Venture Conference highlights both early stage and later stage investment opportunities from: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington, DC.

Click here to see a sampling of some of the 2009 investor attendees. They are roughly about 1000 of the region’s leading Entrepreneurs and High Growth Company Executives (from Startups to Pre-IPO), National Venture Capitalists and Private Equity Professionals, M&A facilitators and other leading professionals serving the high growth technology community.
