Would you say most Social Employees or Employers?

NetProspex has published some pretty interesting findings about the use of social media by companies and their employees. Each company’s ranking is determined by its employees’ overall social media activity, including the average number of connections across various networks. NetProspex also ranked employees on Twitter by average number of tweets and followers, and compared male and female employees’ social scores.

Looks like Microsoft has an army of employees with Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, what does that mean? Everyone knows that Microsoft doesn’t listen to its customers so this seems backwards? Who are they tweeting to and does it even help sales? Is there any correlation between these graphs and anything business related?

Interesting report and findings – but take it with a grain of salt.

The methodology consisted of:

1) 100,000 “contact records that NetProspex had on file for what they considered the “…largest corporations in America…”. I’d argue that this is not statistically significant.

2) The results are via RapLeaf – which is a great product – but only grabs “public” info from social networking profiles and leaves out info from “private” profiles. And even then, it only catches what’s publicly available – ex. sex, age, etc..

3) The study is limited to 9 social networks. I’m not sure of the exact count, but RapLeaf offers more than that.

I believe this study would have much more interesting if:

1) They had compared the number of email addressees they had vs the number of actual employees – ex. 200 email addresses at a company that has 70,000 employees is not necessarily statistically significant.

Also, what is the majority of the 200 addresses are from one central location (ex. Milwaukee) and the company has 30 plus locations nationally & internationally?

2) They had also broken down the RapLeaf results of the % of profiles labeled “public” as opposed to “private”. With this info, they could have created another study on “employee privacy” 😛

What do you think?
