Electric Vehicle Charging Project to Expand to Washington, D.C.

The Department of Energy has approved a $30 million grant that will expand an electric vehicle charging project into Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

Arizona-based ECOtality said that its EV Project will provide an additional 2,600 home chargers for owners of the Chevrolet Volt, as well as another 1,000 chargers for the zero-emission Nissan LEAF.

The project, born out of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), launched last October, with the goal of delivering nearly 15,000 residential and commercial chargers to 13 cities. Project organizers will then analyze data and create a model on how best to grow charging infrastructure throughout the nation. Other cities scheduled for rollout this year include Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona; San Diego; Portland, Eugene, Salem and Corvallis, Oregon; Seattle; and Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
