The White House To Double Available Wireless Spectrum

President Obama intends to  double the available amount of wireless communications spectrum over the next 10 years in an effort to keep up with the ever-growing demand for high-speed video and data transmission to cell phones, laptops and other mobile devices. Yes, we can!

The White House yesterday committed the government to auctioning off an additional 500 megahertz of federal and commercial spectrum, citing a “spectrum crunch” as demand increases for services like online video. The details are very similar to his National Broadband Plan announced earlier this year.

Revenue from the spectrum auctions — which would nearly double the amount of commercial spectrum currently available — would be invested in public safety, related job creation and deficit reduction.

Along with freeing up 500 megahertz of spectrum, the president would like to change the rules so government and commercial spectrum holders can realize greater and earlier benefits from giving up their spectrum; value the spectrum the most, which means auctioning most of the spectrum, but setting some aside for unlicensed use and sharing spectrum when possible. Finally, the memorandum proposes using auction proceeds to aid public safety, reduce the federal deficit and create jobs in industries like smart grids.

According to the White House, In recent years, the amount of information flowing over some wireless networks has grown at over 250 percent per year, with some estimates indicating that the next five years will see an increase in wireless data of between 20 and 45 times 2009 levels, reflecting the increasing use of smartphones, netbooks, and other wireless devices.

The administration hopes to encourage the spread of wireless broadband across the country, including rural areas.
