Former Verizon Washington D.C. President confirmed as the U.S. SBA Deputy Administrator

Marie C. Johns, the former President of Verizon Washington, D.C. is the new Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Nominated by President Obama.  Johns’ appointment to the position was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate yesterday.

The SBA has provided counseling and assistance to small businesses nationwide since 1953. As the agency’s second-ranking official Johns will be in charge of management, policy development and program supervision.

Johns has served as chair of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greater Washington and Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science. She also founded the Washington, D.C. Technology Council and the Students Educated for Economic Development Success program (SEEDS), which trained over 200 high school dropouts for placement in entry-level positions in information technology.

A 21-year veteran of the telecommunications industry, Johns retired from Verizon Washington, D.C. in 2004.
