Tesla Motors Comes to DC

Electric sportscar maker Tesla Motors. will open a store soon in Washington, D.C., according to the Washington Post.

The newspaper reported Monday that Palo Alto-based Tesla is “nearing a deal” to put a store downtown at 1050 K St. NW.

Tesla already has shops in Menlo Park and Santa Monica, as well as in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Fort Lauderdale and Boulder.

So far, the company sells only the $109,000 Roadster sportscar. It’s sold about 1,200 of them, but sales have been slowing down.

The company plans to kit out the shuttered NUMMI factory in Fremont to make its planned Model S sedan, a more prosaic car costing north of $50,000 and aimed at everyday drivers. But that car won’t go on sale at least until 2012, probably.
