According to a study, our city was the fifth most visited vacation destination this past summer. TripCase, a mobile travel management application, analyzed where Americans flew for their vacations over the summer and only New York, Orlando, Las Vegas and Chicago welcomed more tourists than D.C.
The study examined the originating locations for travelers who flew to Washington, D.C., and it looks like our city hosts a geographically diverse group of tourists. Los Angeles provided the highest number of visitors followed by Dallas/Ft. Worth. Boston, Chicago and Atlanta rounded out the list.
As for our overseas visitors, our previous blog posts showed the top nationalities visited andstill visiting DC are Brits, Germans, Australians, Chinese, Frenchies, Canadians, and Mexicans
TripCase also looked at the locations that locals fled to over the summer. Orlando was the top location that D.C. vacationers flew to. Chicago, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas were also in the top five.
Tourism officials say the increased number of international visitors to the DC offsets the number of Americans who have cut back on their travel plans due to the economy. Analysts say international tourists also spend more money than American travelers with an average stay of seven nights. In addition to food and lodging, overseas travelers on average spend $2,000.
